Stevenson, Robert Louis
TREASURE ISLAND. Illustrated Edition
London, Paris, New York & Melbourne: Cassell & Company, 1886. 2 pp undated ads (KING SOLOMON'S MINES) +16 pp ads dated January 1886. Original red cloth decorated in black. First English Illustrated Edition, second or third printing, of Stevenson's classic pirate tale for boys. In November 1883 Cassell published the first edition, unillustrated except for the map of the island (and in an unillustrated binding). In 1884, Roberts Brothers of Boston published the first American edition, which included four illustrations by F.T. Merrill. Then in late 1885 (dated 1885, with printer's date of August 1885 and binder's (ad) date of November 1885), Cassell printed the first English illustrated edition, which has 25 full-page illustrations -- in addition to the island map frontispiece and a pictorial vignette on the printed title page), by a variety of illustrators, including the four by Merrill that had been in the American edition. Cassell's second printing has a printer's date of December 1885 and an ad date of January 1886 -- just like this copy. However, some such copies are dated 1885 on the title page, and some (as here) 1886; these could be two separate printings, or (more likely) one printing was divided into two title page dates -- some for the Christmas 1885 season, and the rest designed not to appear "dated" in 1886. Condition is very good (a few damp-marks at the bottom corners, delicate original ochre endpapers cracked). McKay (Beinecke/Yale) 247.
