Original orange paper boards, titles to spine and front board in dark red, decoration by Charles Ricketts to spine and boards in dark red. With a custom paper dust wrapper, titles to spine in manuscript, supplied in the 1960s by Ifan Kyrle Fletcher. Spine foxed, rubbing to extremities with touch of wear to tips, boards lightly soiled, slight crease to rear board, foxing to endpapers, contents largely clean; a very good copy in jacket. First edition, first impression, one of 2,000 copies printed. This volume contains four short stories, the title story, "The Sphinx without a Secret", "The Canterville Ghost", and "The Model Millionaire". Provenance: purchased from Sotheby's auction by book dealer and co-founder of the Society for Theatre Research Ifan Kyrle Fletcher in 1960, with his neat pencil note on the front free endpaper. Sold by Fletcher to Helen Hambro, née Boyson (1936-2004), an editorial assistant for the Society's Theatre Notebook, and bought from the Hambro estate. Mason 345.
