The Woolworth Building
New York: Privately Printed, 1913. Frank Woolworth’s privately printed edition of Schuyler’s essay on the recently completed building. Book designed by Bruce Rogers and illustrated by Earl Horter (with pencil signed lithograph as frontis.) and published in an edition of 1,000 copies, dedicated to the architect Cass Gilbert. The gothic motif rules throughout--surprisingly the text is in a modern typeface but decorations, headers, the devices on the covers, and the very first letter of the essay, illuminated with gold leaf, are reminders of the earlier style so prevalent in the design of this 20th century skyscraper, once the tallest building in the world. First edition, limited to 1,000 copies. Narrow folio; 42 pp.; frontis. and nine full-page illustrations of details and perspective drawings by Earl Horter. Spotting to preliminary leaves; else a very good copy in vellum-backed gilt-stamped boards with embossed ivory image of building’s entrance to front board. [Attributes: First Edition]
Bookseller: Trevian Books [Piermont, NY, U.S.A.]
