Sun and Shadow Archive of Original Documents/contracts
New York: Dodd, Mead & Co, 1954. New York: Dodd, Mead & Co. Very Good. 1954. First Edition. Softcover. Archive of Original documents/contracts for Breuer's important book, SUN AND SHADOW, published in 1956. Includes the original signed contract between Dodd, Mead & Co. And Breuer, dated 1954. This is the only piece in the collection signed by Breuer. This contract is also signed by Peter Blake, co-writer, friend of Breuer, and Curator of the Dept. Of Architecture and Design at MOMA. There is also a 6-page contract for the English edition, published by Longmans, Green & Co. This is dated 1955 and is signed by Dodd and T. M. Longman. Also the 2-page contract for the Japanese edition, published by Shokoku-Sha Publishing Company. This is dated in 1956 and signed by Dodd and the director of the Japanese publisher. There is also some earlier correspondence between Dodd, Mead and an English publisher, Art and Technics, dated in 1950 & '51. This edition apparently never came to fruition due to costs and delays. There are other receipts and documents concerning the publication of the book. Breuer was one of the most important and influential of the mid-twentieth century architects and designers. He designed the famed Wassily Chair for Bauhaus in the 1920's and the bent wood Long Chair in the mid-1930's. Today many of his buildings are landmarks of modernist architecture in New York and elsewhere. Eleven items in total. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; Signed by Author .
