Oliver , Andrew
Autograph Letter Signed July 13, 1738
Andrew Oliver (1706-1774), Autograph Letter Signed, July 13, 1738, written to Brinley Sylvester from Boston, to his uncle by marriage about the speed of sea travel to Newport from Shelter Island over night and onto Boston the following Friday. He visited the Governor of Massachusetts and tried to broker the sale of Brinley Sylvester's bull to the Governor. Mention of possible armed conflict, presaging the War of Jenkin's Ear (1739-1748), refers to tensions in Spanish America, where British slave traders needed Spain's continued asiento contract to sell slaves in Spanish America: "Whither it will be Peace or War is as uncertain as ever." Fine condition. Andrew Oliver is best remembered today as the official charged with carrying out the provisions of the Stamp Act. He was married to Thomas Hutchinson's sister-in-law.
