Collection of 72 hand-painted designs for Boys' Haori
NP, Kyoto, 1920. Oblong folio (11.5 x 15"). [1] leaf (handwritten text), [72] leaves (plates). Original string-bound wrappers with handwritten title in Japanese calligraphy on front cover. This unique work contains 72 striking hand-painted illustrations of figurative designs for the silk lining of haori jackets, a long traditional Japanese jacket, with deep, kimono style sleeves, designed to be worn on top of a kimono. Exemplifying the typical Japanese boy's school uniform of the early twentieth century, these exquisite plates feature examples of splendidly hand-painted images relating to a wide range of subjects, including scenes of anthropomorphic animals (rabbits, mice) in amusing scenes; Noh actors performing; musicians (mostly flute players), and traditional outdoor Japanese scenes (children playing, farmer heading home after his work in the fields, Noblemen accompanied with their servants, fishermen, etc.). Each character is depicted in traditional dress, with many wearing very high Geta shoes. Some of the most caracteristic and iconic elements of Japanese landscape are featured in the background, such as Mount Fuji, cherry trees in bloom, Temples, etc. These beautiful designs over mostly blue background were painted with colorful opaque pigments and Gofun onto backed rice paper. Each plate has a descriptive small white cartouche hand-captioned in Japanese. Wrappers partly creased and darkened. Fore-edge of text leaf partly creased and damp-stained.
