Megillat Esther [MANUSCRIPT]
Bezalel, Palestine, 1920. 21.5 inches (top to bottom of spindle). 14 inches (scroll case). Burled olive wood case spectacularly carved with depictions of Rachel's tomb and the old city of Jerusalem, and ringed with four multicolored inlay mosaics. The words Jerusalem (yerushalem without the final yod), Kever Rachel (Rachel's tomb) and Ir Tziyon (the city of Zion aka Jerusalem) written in black ink. Manuscript with black ink on white parchment, ten inches in height, containing the biblical book of Esther. Letters in Torah style script with decorative tagin. From the Bezalel school in Jerusalem. An unusually large and finely carved example of Bezalel arts and crafts. Complete and kosher. Fine condition. The two distinguishing points to help determine dating are the spelling of Jerusalem which, until the 1930s on decorative objects such as this olive wood, was spelled without the final yod. The other primary point is the colored mosaic patterns that are carved into the olive wood box. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
