Hicks-Judd Company
San Francisco Block Book
Hicks-Judd Company, 1906. Hardcover. Very Good. This fourth edition of the San Francisco Block Book was published just 6 months after the 1906 earthquake. "On account of the recent fire that visited our City, we were called on, within a period of twelve months, to issue a second volume of our Block Book. After unusual difficulties in both compiling and manufacture we now present this volume, and hope our efforts will merit your appreciation" (Publisher's note). 13 ¾" x 10 ¾". Three-quarter brown leather and green cloth, gilt titles on spine. Boards are thick, possibly wood. Xxii, 897 pp. Fully illustrated from drawings of blocks and streets, numbered and named. Condition: This book has been repaired: re-backed spine, text block re-sewn, and hinge repaired with matching facsimile endpaper. ?" chip to leather toward middle of spine. Wear to where the edge of cloth meets leather on both covers. Vague discoloration to green cloth. Shelfwear to tail of front cover. Dampstaining from beginning to page 180 or so. Chipped edges from beginning through index maps. Finger smudges to some early pages. Remaining pages are mostly nice with sporadic wear. Some creasing to pages at hinge (likely result from text block being re-sewn). Spotting to fore-edge. Map from August 1907 showing area burned in fire has been glued to rear endpaper. Stamped by "Russel & Callan Agents", who were real estate and insurance agents, most like the original owners of the Block Book.
