Melville's first book. The first American edition of Melville's first book, based on his idyll in the south Pacific, and which marked him as a writer of promise on both sides of the Atlantic. BAL notes of copies bound in cloth, "in some copies the leaf of ads (pp. ix-x) is not present" (as here); it is a singleton leaf excised from vol. I (known from copies in wrappers and occasional survivals in cloth bindings). An attractive copy with distinguished provenance. BAL 13653 (binding variant A) Original brown cloth stamped in blind, spine titled in gilt, pale tan endsheets decorated in red with dots and rosettes. Very good plus (some foxing, small old adhesion on front flyleaf, slightest traces of rubbing to extremities). Ownership signature of Cora Lyman, dated August 1846.
