From Manassas to Appomattox: Memoirs of the Civil War in America
J. B. Lippincott Company, 1896. 690 pages. Presentation inscription on blank front free end leaf from Capt. O. E. Morse to W. A. Jenkins. Both men entered the Fifth Regiment Kansas Volunteer Cavalry as line officers. Orlin E. Morse came to Kansas in 1857 to fight for the Free State. After more than three years fighting in the civil war he mustered out as a Captain and returned to his home in Mound City, Kansas where he lived until his death in 1917. Wilton A. Jenkins of Kansas City mustered out as a Lt. Colonel. The inscription reads in full: "To my much esteemed companion / in Arms during the war of the rebellion / Capt. O. E. Morse, / This book is presented as a slight / testimonial of my fraternal regard / and friendship born of a mutual / sharing of the dangerous and hardship / incident of that war that will be / that will be as induring (sic) as the life of / W. A. Jenkins / Chicago Oct. 3, 1896." Original deep red cloth covers are a little faded over spine and show a few scuffs on spine. A little wear is seen at spine ends and corners. Illustration on top cover remains bright. Hinges (internal) are broke and covers are held by webbing only. Text block remains tight and contents are clean and intact. There are a few small scuffs on fore edge. [Attributes: First Edition]
