T.p. state w/o "Bookhout.SC". 8vo, signed in 4s. 9-1/8" x 5-3/4" While Smith notes that both the Winchester & Harper editions of this title appeared on the same day, Smith postulates that the Wincester preceded the Harper by a few hours, though that is by no means a certainty. Cf. Smith DICKENS AMERICAN EDITIONS 4n(5).In either case, both quite uncommon, especially in the original wrappers, as here. General wear & soiling, with minor edge chipping. Age-toning. Small hole in upper margin of rear wrapper [no text affected]. Withal, a VG copy. Original publisher's paper covers, sewn. Front wrapper printed with ornamental type, decorations. Adverts to wrappers, with rear interior advert dated December 1844 [according to Smith, this edition published 27 January 1845, and who notes a February 1845 advert list]. Now housed in an archival mylar sleeve 1st edition thus, i.e., by this publisher (Edgar & Vail, p. 22; Gimbel A87 [second copy]; VanderPoel B389(1) [stating the Harper as the 2nd US edition]; Wilkins, p. 38).
