A Collection of Cabinet Cards of Prince Prisdang Chumsai and Members of the Thai Royal Family circa 1882.
1882. Ipswich, Bangkok & London: John Thompson, John White & Francis Chit (?).. A collection of 14 black and white cabinet cards, a smaller silver gelatin portrait photograph of King Rama V and an invitation from Prince Prisdang. All photographs showing princes of the Siamese (now Thai) Thai Chakri Dynasty, in the late 19th century. The Chakri dynasty continues as the current royal family of Thailand. Three of the photographs also include two European men who were presumably teachers at the school the boys were attending. The invitation addressed to Reverend J (?). Pickford, requested the honour of his attendance at Prince Prisdang's Investiture by Royal Commission to the rank of Phra Wongs Th'oe Phia Ong Chow and Grand Cross of the most honourable Order of the Cross of Siam at the Siamese Legation in Cornwall Gardens in London on Monday the 26th November (1882). The cabinet cards in this collection include seven from the photography studio of John White, Ipswich, one from John Thompson at that time in London and four from Alexander Bassano's studio also in London. A single formal portrait of King Chulalongkorn, Rama V, mounted on black card is likely from the Bangkok studio of Francis Chit (Chit Chitrakani. 1830-91), the first commercial photographer in Siam who also served as court photographer for both Rama IV and Rama V. The reverse of this card bears the words "By Appointment to H.M. King of Siam" and "Bangkok" but the studio name has been obscured. A fourteenth cabinet card is unattributed.
