London: Jonathan Cape, 1935. First Numbered Limited Trade Edition, no 733 of 750 copies printed. Rebound to the spine with the original boards. The pigskin spine had perished and has been replaced with brown morocco leather. Large 4to. Pp. 672. With 51 full page plates, of which 4 are coloured, 3 facsimile manuscripts and 4 folding maps. New morocco leather spine on original buckram boards, spine lettered in gilt, gilt vignette on upper cover, original marbled endpapers. Upper edges gilt, others uncut. A few scratches on the boards, some spots to outer page edges. First published edition, limited to 750 copies, of which this is no. 733. Distinct lean to the volume, top of the spine leather slightly darker, many pages uncut, a ‘never read’ copy. The autobiographical account by T. E. Lawrence ("Lawrence of Arabia") of his legendary part in the Arab rebellion against the Ottoman Turks during the years 1916-18. Lawrence didn't believe the text would be of interest to the public in general and first only allowed limited publications for friends (in 1922) and subscribers (in 1926). Lawrence was very involved in the production of the Seven Pillars. To be able to finance the project he authorised Jonathan Cape to publish a heavily abridged and simplified version called "Revolt in the Desert" in 1927. The Seven Pillars is lavishly illustrated with plates and portraits from sketches, and folding maps. The illustrators were the best British artists of the day; Wadsworth, Nash, Roberts, Blair Hughes-Stanton, Dobson, William Nicholson and others.
