Front hinge tender but holding; binding, hinges, and text block otherwise secure. Brown floral end papers. Frontispiece plate and 173 woodcut text illustrations by E.W Kemble. Lightly pencilled bookseller notation on the half title and half title verso pages. Previous ownership inscription on the ffep; pages otherwise unmarked. Title page dated 1884. 438 text pages, followed by a blank page with a floral drwaing, followed by a 32 pp. publisher's catalogue dated October 1884. This Chatto & Windus edition is the true first edition, preceeding the U.S. first edition by a few months. Arguably Twain's magnum opus, "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" has been widely and continuously revered (and criticized) since its 1884 publication.
