Braun & Hogenberg
ROTERODAMUM (Rotterdam)
Braun & Hogenberg, 1588. Bird's-eye view from the west of the city, surrounded by a wall erected c. 1360. Very clear the numbers of canals, including the River Rotte, from which the city gets the name from. After growing up as a fishing village in the early 13th century, Rotterdam was granted a municipal charter in 1340. Canals to the Schie linked the city with Delft, the most important trade centre at that time, becoming slowly an important port.Tapestry, ceramic and clothing were very vital business.Latin text on verso, 540x 400 cm,some old restoration on the back, some tiny holes in the centrefold.Overall a good copy
