GABRIEL NAUDE (1600-1653) [& HUGO GROTIUS (1583-1645)]
Bibliographia politica. In qua plerique omnes ad civile prudentiam scriptores qua recensentur, qua diiudicantur. Accessit Hugonis Grotii epistola de studio politico...
Lyon: Ex officina Ioan. Maire, 1642. First edition published in Venice 1633, a second in Wittenberg in 1641. This is the third edition. The first French translation was also published in 1642. Naude was chief librarian of the famous Bibliotheque Mazarine, and during his lifetime published two important works regarding the organization of libraries. In 1627 Naude published 'Advis pour dresser une bibliothèque', a work that offered advice on building a library. In 1633 the work offered here was published with a view toward organizing political works within a coherent genre that would benefit the systemization of knowledge within the area. Naude was the first to coin the term 'bibliography', and modern library science has followed in his footsteps. An important work in the history of library science. Bound in is a separate work by jurist Hugo Grotius on the study of political science. A very tiny book, measuring only 10 x 5.5cm. 32mo, 271pp., [49]. A very fresh copy. Small tear on index leaf without loss. Bound in contemporary vellum.
