Ian Fleming
GOLDFINGER (first sate with extra indent to skull)
London: Jonathan Cape, 1959. A rare A7a 1.1 first state edition of Goldfinger by Ian Fleming; first edition / first state 1959; published by Jonathan Cape Ltd, London. 318 pages; 8vo. The front board has the extra "notch" indent to the skull blindstamp; one of the few that were originally printed in the first run. (See Gilbert) The vast majority of first editions do not have this extra indent and copies are becoming increasingly hard to find.Publisher's black clothed hardback over papered boards. Front board illustrated with skull complete with rare extra indent and gilt embossed "eye" medallions; gilt lettered title to spine. Condition is very good + with only issue being minor bumping to spine ends. Interior is similarly good; free of any inscriptions, clean white endpapers and leafs; there are a few specks on a handful of leafs, also a few creases and some sunning to text block edges.Richard Chopping designed original first state dust jacket with reviews of this book, "Dr No" and "The Diamond Smugglers" on the flaps and a list of Fleming books on the rear cover - "From Russia With Love" to "Casino Royale". Nice vibrant front cover which shows really well; some chipping at top of front hinge flap and spine ends. Also some sunning to spine and rubbing to joints. Rear cover showing signs of sunning; interior flaps fine. Price is clipped.
