Van den Hecke
Set of farm animals: dogs, sheep, cows, cattle, horses] Magnificentissimo principi Paulo Iordano Bracciani duci etc. Patrono suo plurimum colendo Hanc Zoographiam Consecrabat Humillimus cliens quam ipse inuenit et fecit aqua forti Joannes vanden Hecke
van den Hecke, 1656. First edition later state (after the addition of a border line, as usual). Nine loose etchings (of twelve) from this renowned and rare series of farmyard animals and dogs, consisting of 1-2; 4-5, 7, 9-12 in the sequence. In more detail, what we have here are: 1) Very attractive etched title page, showing a cow, horse, donkey, sheep, and dog at a water fountain trough, with a bull on the left hand margin. 2) A plough horse with a large yoke, a cart, and a donkey braying in the background. 4) A pack of dogs, many with collars, that in the foreground tethered, by a hut with a broken door, presumably used as a kennel. 5) Two dogs meeting each other, the one sniffing the other, a village behind with thatched conical roofs, 7) A goat looking over two rams, by a cliff next to which is a squirrel eating a nut. 9) A dog taking a drink out of a sarcophagus which has been pressed into service as a drinking fountain. 10) A cart horse eating hay from a fixed axle cart with a village in the back ground. 11) Two dogs, resting, one on its hind legs, the other lying down. 12) Six sheep grazing and resting. Narrow margins as usual, mounted on early yellow paper (as issued?). Title page mount a little marked to top left hand corner, engravings perhaps a little dusty occasionally, otherwise in good, intact condition. Please note: nine out of the set of twelve, but very attractive particularly of the dogs - and of course could be used to make up a complete set. [Attributes: First Edition]
