H.R. Young and T.H. Whitely, 1819. Four volumes. First Edition in book form, originally issued in parts from 1790 to 1795. Royal 8vo. (240 x 150 mm); pp xii, 171, [5 blanks]; vi, 235, [5 blanks]; iv, 292, [4 blanks]; iv, 260, [4 blanks]; 155 engraved plates in total engraved by R. Grave, G. Cruikshank (14 examples), H. Cook, and W. Maddocks, with one after J. Van der Gucht. Although vol I does not have plates for CARSTAIRS (p87) or ELLIS (p94), vol III has two additional plates that are not called for in the list of contents - viz STONE (p89) and MAHONEY & WHITE (p251). Vols II, III and IV have the imprint of T.H. Whiteley; "Whiteley" spelled "Whitely" only in imprint of vol I. Publisher's original greenish-blue morocco ornately blindstamped sides with a gilt border of 13 different floral tools set within arched bands running around the outside of the boards; edges of spines sl rubbed with minor shelfwear to ends of spines. All pages edges coated in gilt leaf. Light scattered foxing throughout, mainly marginal and on rectos of plates. A near Fine set. "Caulfield's 'remarkable characters' are persons famous for their eccentricity, immorality, dishonesty, and so forth", DNB.<br />Caulfield was an author and print seller with a small shop in Old Round Court, Strand, frequented by Dr Johnson and other luminaries. About 1795 he removed to Clare Court, Drury Lane, before moving again to William Street, Adelphi, then Compton Street, Soho.
