WELLS, HG
THE TIME MACHINE An Invention
London : William Heinemann, 1895. First Edition. 8vo (7 x 4.5 ins); [viii] + (152) + [16] pp. publisher's adverts. Bound in the original oatmeal cloth with violet lettering to front and spine, slightly faded, and the sphinx decoration to front board. Page edges untrimmed. Scattered spots of foxing to the endpapers and final two pps of adverts. A near Fine copy. The first edition of the classic science-fiction novel by HG Wells. This copy has slightly later advertisements than the very first issue. The text black is identical, just the 16 pages of Heinemann adverts, starting with 'Donovan Pasha' by Gilbert Parker and ending with 'The Virginof the Rocks' by Gabriele D'Annunzio. This combination of adverts indicates the printed sheets and binding cases from the first issue were still in stock and being bound as the trade demanded, so the advertisements are a later configuration than the 'Currey A' issue, in which the first title on the advertisements is'The Manxman' by Paul Caine. [CURREY state 'A', Wells Bibliography No.4] [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
Bookseller: Worlds End Bookshop (ABA, PBFA, ILAB) [LONDON, United Kingdom]
