Baum, L. Frank; Neill, J.R. (illustrator)
Reilly & Britton, Chicago, 1906. First edition, a superior copy in first state, with the contestant blank, and in an original unrecorded dust jacket. This early non-Oz fantasy relates the adventures of John Dough, a gingerbread man who comes alive, and his comrade Chick the Cherub in the Palace of Romance, the Land of the Mifkets, etc. While the binding is State A according to Baum bibliographer Paul R. Bienvenue, he does not record a jacket comporting to this copy. An early, but likely later jacket. Neverthless, an excellent copy, rarely seen in any dust jacket. Quarto. Original full tan cloth stamped in red, black and brown on front and in black on rear. In original red dust jacket printed in black, which reproduces the front, spine, and rear cover images and text to respective panels (flaps blank). Pictorial endpapers. With contestant blank intact. Without correction in line 10 of page 275 ("cage" instead of "cave"). Featuring 40 fantastic full page color illustrations, 20 color pictorial chapter heads, 100 in-text black and whites and pictorial title by J.R. Neill. Ads at rear. 315, [1], [4] pages. Hinges repaired. Jacket notably repaired on verso at folds and spine, with moderate chipping. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover; In Dust Jacket]
