Root and Branch. A Seasonal of the Arts. Number 1, Volume 3.
Flansham Bognor: Pear Tree Press, 1919. Guthrie, James. Quarto. 14ff. One of thirty copies signed by James Guthrie on the colophon. With sixteen illustrations by Guthrie printed in single, two, or three colors directly from the plates. Six plates feature calligraphic text and illustration; seven plates contain calligraphic text only; three plates are pictorial only. Another of Guthrie's periodical ventures, Root and Branch was issued in two editions: an ordinary, uncolored edition, and a colored edition printed from plates. This volume was intended to be issued in four parts, but, as Guthrie noted in a printed sheet that accompanied some copies, the first two parts were dispersed "without regard to Sets," so a complete set of this Volume is virtually unobtainable. Apart from some light wrinkling along yapp edges, this is a fine example of a Pear Tree rarity.
