Contemporary blue paper wrappers, early manuscript title on front wrapper. Wrappers worn, neatly repaired along spine, rear wrapper discolored. Shorthand annotation on front free endpaper, p.[1], and the second plate. small tear to outer margin of first few leaves (no text affected). Minor soiling to folding plate, tear to inner margin just touching text of leaves B1-B2, otherwise very good. One of the earliest shorthand manuals printed in the United States, based on the system of Thomas Lloyd, the "Father of American Shorthand." This copy includes the list of subscribers, often missing, which includes several members of Congress, along with Thomas Jefferson (as Secretary of State) and James Madison (then Representative for Virginia), who subscribed for ten copies. This brief manual sets out Lloyd's system and the rationale for shorthand, along with plates showing the symbols used in Lloyd's system. Lloyd adapted his system from that of Robert Graves and Samuel Ashton's THE WHOLE ART OF TACHYGRAPHY (1775), one of many stenography manuals that appeared in the later 18th and early 19th centuries. Whether Lloyd learned his shorthand originally from this work or from the English Jesuits at the College of Saint-Omer in Belgian (as Carey claims), the system published here follows Graves and Ashton.
