The image size is ca. 24.3 x 35.7 inch.Antique map, titled: ''Carte de Detroit de Magallan […]'' - Scarce French Sea chart of the Straits of Magellan, based upon the voyages and explorations of Phillip Parker King and Robert Fitz Roy. Shows the Straits of Magellan and neighboring sounds, canals, etc. in remarkable detail, including place names, soundings and sailing directions. One of the most detailed and accurate charts of the region published in the early/mid-19th Century. Published by the Depot de la Marine in 1838, based on surveys of 1826-1834. These type of charts are scarse as they were actually used at sea for navigation.Artists and Engravers: Made by 'Chassant' after 'Phillip Parker King and Robert Fitz Roy for the Depot de la Marine'. Depot des Cartes et Plans de la Marine (1720 - present), often called the Depot de Marine, was a French hydrographic mapping organization founded in 1720. Much like the U.S. Coast Survey, the British Admiralty, and the Spanish Deposito Hydrografico, the Depot was initiated as a storehouse and distribution center of existing nautical and marine charts. Eventually the Depot initiated its on mapping activities in an attempt to improve and expand upon existing material.
