Thomas, Jerry; Asbury, Herbert
THE BON VIVANT'S COMPANION . OR. HOW TO MIX DRINKS
Alfred A. Knopf, New York & London, 1928. Second printing (issued simultaneously with the first printing) of the second edition, a resurrection in the middle of the Prohibition era of the scarce 19th-century classic that codified American cocktails. Thomas's book, the first cocktail manual, included the first published recipes for many famous mixed drinks, including fizzes, flips, and sours. First published in 1862, this 1928 re-issue was the last edition printed for decades: Dale DeGroff, founder of the Museum of the American Cocktail, has described his own difficult hunt for a copy of either edition when he first investigated Thomas in the 1980s. Often referred to as "Asbury," this edition contains an introductory biography of Thomas by Herbert Asbury that remained the standard for the rest of the century. 8.5'' x 5.5''. Original yellow cloth with green pictorial cocktail design. Illustrated with full-page black-and-white plates and in-text vignettes throughout. liv, 170 pages. Last leaf roughly opened, offsetting on rear endpaper. Slight lean, a bit of soiling to spine. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
