London: Tinsley Brothers,, 1872. Octavo. Original brown pebble-grain cloth, titles in gilt to spine, decorative borders in blind to boards, pale yellow endpapers.Faint W.H. Smith circulating library embossed stamp to front free endpaper. A hint of wear to extremities, pp. 31 and 159 carelessly opened with marginal loss, internally fresh; a near-fine copy. First edition in book form, in a variant publisher's binding that does not conform exactly to Sadleir's description of the primary and secondary bindings. The frame device stamped on the covers is in blind, not black, and the spine is not ruled. The Golden Lion of Granpere is "not only Trollope's best shorter book, but one of the most charming idylls in English literature" (Walpole in Gerould).
