Woolf, Virginia
Between the Acts
London: The Hogarth Press, 1941. First edition. A Fine copy of the book in a Near Fine dust jacket. Jacket with a few little nicks at the extremities, but on the whole a bright clean copy. Between the Acts was the final novel of Woolf's career, published posthumously, about a country house party and a pageant staged by its guests. Though Woolf despaired in a letter to her publisher only one day before her suicide that the book was too "silly and trivial" to publish, it is becoming recognized as one of her "richest and most self aware expressions" (Harris). For just as action occurs among characters between the acts of their pageant, the novel's action unfolds between one civil war and the dawn of another world war; it juxtaposes silence with chaos; it explores the layered relationships of various individual selves with a variety of smaller personal and wider global worlds. "That Woolf should put such a dynamic, ambiguous drama at the heart of her final novel is entirely fitting for a writer who sought to explore the mysteries of character and consciousness throughout her extraordinary body of work" (BBC). Fine in Near Fine dust jacket. Fine in Near Fine dust jacket. [Attributes: First Edition; In Dust Jacket]
