Washington DC, 1881. First edition. Very Good. Contemporary half morocco over marbled boards, with gilt to spine. Dark topstain, remaining edges speckled blue. Marbled endpapers. Extremities generally rubbed; large chip to crown of spine; bottom front and top rear joints cracked but sound. Internally fresh and bright. Collating [5], 6-365, [1, blank], 367-368: complete. A presentation copy with both family and political associations, inscribed by Rutherford B. Hayes on the title page in the year of publication: "To Lewis Austin from his friend R.B. Hayes, Spiegel Grove 25th Nov. 1881." Lewis Austin, a relative of Hayes', resided in Cleveland, Ohio; and Hayes stayed with him and his family during his 1881 return to Spiegel Grove, OH following his presidency. An additional inscription reveals that Austin himself also gifted the volume, passing it to a Columbus, Ohio lawyer and judge who also served in the state House of Representatives and was later nominated by President Grover Cleveland as Chief Justice of the United States District Court for the District of Columbia from 1887 to 1901. Austin writes on the title: "Edward Bingham from the Hon. Sr. Austin, March 13/90." Scarce in trade, the present is the only signed copy on the market; and it has appeared only once at auction in the past 35 years. Before serving as the 19th President of the United States, Hayes practiced law in Ohio, defending numerous enslaved persons after the 1850 passage of the Fugitive Slave Law.
