HERRICK, W. A. [photographer]
Thirteen Boudoir Prints of a Pack Trip to Mt. Shasta.
[Shasta County]: W. A. Herrick, [ca. 1880]. 13 original boudoir prints (8 1/2 x 5 1/4 inches). On professional gilt edged burgundy mounts. Each print is stamped W. A Herrick and bears a useful manuscript caption. They are numbered 1-13. Wonderful condition. Not much is known of W. A. Herrick. Upon researching we could find only 2 Herrick photographs in institutional holdings. Palmquist made no mention of him and Mautz merely states that he was active in the Mt. Shasta area around 1880. Nonetheless, it is obvious that he was an accomplished photographer. There seem to have been 8 men on the expedition and likely their goal was mianly to fish (as evidenced by the 3 prints of them doing so). Their guide as a John Tulloway and print #1 shows him in front of his house. Photograph No. 13 shows three men coasting down Mt. Shasta on their backsides and No. 1 shows them at the summit of Mt. Shasta. Other interesting prints are; No. 8-Railroad Camp; No. 13-Sisson's Cottage, McCloud River ("Tessie"); No. 9-Horse Camp, 10,000 ft elevation.
