In 'On the Inertia of Energy Required by the Relativity Principle' (pp. 371-384), "Einstein discussed the relationship between inertial mass and energy, arguing for their complete equivalence, namely, that every mass has an equivalent energy just as every form of energy has an equivalent mass. This relation says that a photon can convert into matter with the appropriate mass, and vice versa. He deduced the exact expression for the equivalence of mass and energy, his celebrated equation E = mc2" (Calaprice, The Einstein Almanac, 16, p. 20). Among other papers of import, is The -particle and the periodic system of the elements by the Dutch amateur physicist Antonius Johannes van den Broek. In it, van den Broek proposed that the alpha particle, recently discovered by Ernest Rutherford, consisted of one half a helium atom (a particle with an atomic weight of two and a positive charge of one) and that the alpha particle was a component of all other atoms, similar in notion to the hydrogen atom in Proust's theory. He was correct in his first supposition and incorrect in his second. He used this theory to propose a new periodic table with 41 spaces for undiscovered elements.
