Baum, L. Frank; Neill, John R.
Reilly & Britton Co, Chicago, 1911. First edition of this undersea fantasy meant to be the first in a new follow-up series to the Oz books, a terrific copy. Often called the "Underwater Wizard Of Oz," THE SEA FAIRIES was published in hopes that Baum could maintain his streak of homeruns without continuing to create new books set in the Land of Oz, of which he was beginning to tire. Lavishly illustrated in an Art Nouveau style by J.R. Neill, the same illustrator who worked on the Oz books, THE SEA FAIRIES nevertheless failed to reach the same level of sales. Even after the new series was abandoned (after the second book, SKY ISLAND), its characters were not: Baum incorporated them into his Oz books, making them the heroes of SCARECROW OF OZ (1915). Rarely seen in this condition. 9'' x 6.5''. Original green cloth, gilt pictorial paste-on. Pictorial endpapers in red and green, yellow text block edges. Last 2 lines transposed on page 95 & and lines 14 & 15 transposed on page 105 (first issue). Illustrated by Neill with 12 duotone plates surrounded by green and yellow iridescent pictorial borders, plus many full page and partial page black-and-white images. Only slightest rubbing to cover and a few tiny random spots. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
Bookseller: Type Punch Matrix [Silver Spring, MD, U.S.A.]
