FRANZ, Wolfgang
The history of brutes, or, A description of living creatures
London: E. Okes, for Francis Haley, 1670. 1670 1st ed ENGLISH Existence of UNICORNS Brutes Animalium Cryptozoology BeastsWolfgang Franz was a German Lutheran theologian from the 16th-century who, curiously, composed a zoological treatise on the history of animals at the end of his career. Franz was known for his disputations and theological treatises and this book, on animals no less, is right in line with his important works of theology. One of the most fascinating aspects of this book is Franz's insistence that the unicorn is a regularly occurring animal in nature. He supports his claims through scriptural references to what he considers to be the Bible's description of a unicorn. Other oddities include the existence of various hybrid creatures, rise of dead animals back to life, and the mysterious appearance of rats and mice on ships.
