Dulac, Edmund
Hodder & Stoughton, London, 1907. Signed limited edition, one of only 350 numbered copies signed by Dulac, of the book that launched his career with gift-book publisher Hodder & Stoughton, a beautiful copy. Dulac was only 25 years old when he was given the opportunity to illustrated this deluxe edition of the ARABIAN NIGHTS for the gift market. It was Dulac's first collaboration with Hodder & Stoughton; the book's robust sales led to a long partnership with the publisher to create an annual deluxe illustrated edition of a classic title for the holiday season. Thus this book can be said to have launched Dulac's career as one of the most respected artists of the Golden Age of Illustration. The frontispiece illustration of Scheherazade is especially striking. A very scarce Dulac limited edition. Quarto. 10.5'' x 8.75''. Original full gilt-stamped vellum. Top edge gilt, other edges uncut, brown heavy stock endpapers. Frontispiece and 49 tipped-in color plates on brown heavy stock at the back of the book as issued (50 images total). xvi, 133, [3] pages. Minimal soil, with original ties and with none of the warping that is usually found on this title. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
