Meggendorfer, Lothar
DAS PUPPENHAUS [The Doll's House]
Schreiber, Essingen & Munich, 1911. One of the most elaborate and charming of the mechanicals issued by Meggendorfer, a pop-up panorama of a doll's house. This pop-up opens to form 6 scenes, some of which need assembling by the child and are then reusable. There are 2 outside and 4 detailed interior rooms of a doll's house. As unfolded to its full length of 4 feet, people, furniture, and even fixtures pop-out; each of the scenes is rich in detail. There is even a piano with a bust of Beethoven on the top. (See Haining's work on moveable books, in which the French edition of the entire panorama, called MAISON DE POUPEE, is reproduced.) Due to its popularity, it was issued over the years with a few changes to reflect the times; for instance the gypsy cart is replaced here by a motorcar. It is rare to find any mechanical in such magnificent condition, let alone in the box: a wonderful survival. 8.5'' x 10.25''. Original boards bound concertina-style with red cloth at edges, and pictorial paste-on. In original publisher's board slipcase with printed label. Illustrated with color printed domestic scenes that fold out to create 3D rooms. Plastic in window worn, a few inconsequential creases, a few discreet minor repairs, else near fine and bright. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
