Doyle, Arthur Conan
THE ADVENTURES OF SHERLOCK HOLMES with: THE MEMOIRS OF SHERLOCK HOLMES
George Newnes, Limited, London, 1894. First editions in book form of the first two collections of Sherlock Holmes short stories that launched the detective into international fame. While Doyle had published two short novels starring Holmes and Watson in 1887 and 1890, it was not until he adapted the mysteries of the duo into short story format for the STRAND magazine that the series exploded. Beginning with Holmes's failure to catch the magnetic Irene Adler in "A Scandal in Bohemia" and ending with his dramatic disappearance while fighting Moriarty over the Reichenbach Falls in "The Final Problem," these two collections include the majority of the most beloved and iconic scenes in the Sherlockian canon, and make up two thirds of Doyle's own list of favorite Holmes stories. These are beautiful copies of the heart of Sherlock Holmes literature. Two octavo volumes, 9.25'' x 6.25''. Original full light blue and dark blue cloth, front boards gilt-lettered and stamped with "Strand Library" vignettes in black (ADVENTURES with blank street sign); spines gilt-lettered and -stamped. Beveled edges. Sepia floral- and peacock-patterned endpapers. All edges gilt. Both volumes illustrated by Sidney Paget. [4], 317, [1]; [6], 279, [1] pages. Each housed in custom marble-lined blue slipcases with gilt-lettered labels. Hinges expertly and almost invisibly reinforced. Some light edgewear to bindings primarily around spine extremities, corners mildly bumped. A bit of foxing to title pages, but interior overall quite clean. Nicer than generally seen. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]
