Leather on spine has faded, decorated in gilt. Boards in red leather and are decorated with a gilt border. Third Volume s colour of the front board has faded. Marbled paste downs, end papers, and page edges. All front end pages have foxing. All volumes very good, strong. SIGNED and dedicated by Arthur Balfour, ex Priminister of Great Britain [1902 to 1905] to his friend Cosly Trench [whose son Charles Trench of Sowell Hall gave them to his trustee R Boyd]. Arthur James Balfour, 1st Earl of Balfour, KG, OM, PC, DL ( 25 July 1848 19 March 1930) was a British Conservative politician who was the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from July 1902 to December 1905, and later Foreign Secretary. Entering Parliament in 1874, Balfour achieved prominence as Chief Secretary for Ireland, in which position he suppressed agrarian unrest whilst taking measures against absentee landlords. He opposed Irish Home Rule, saying there could be no half-way house between Ireland remaining within the United Kingdom or becoming independent. From 1891 he led the Conservative Party in the House of Commons, serving under his uncle, Lord Salisbury, whose government won large majorities in 1895 and 1900. In July 1902 he succeeded Lord Salisbury as Prime Minister. He oversaw reform of British defence policy and the Entente Cordiale, an agreement with France that influenced Britain's decision to join the First World War.
