Whittet & Shepperson, Richmond, VA, 1932. A pristine example of this "immensely moving essay" by a "great practitioner in the field" (Nevins), and one of the "200 most important Confederate books." (Harwell). Royal 8vo (320 x 240mm): 24 unopened leaves printed in brown black. with four tipped-in, tissue-guarded photographs of statues of Confederate generals on Monument Avenue in Richmond (including frontispiece of Lee monument). Publisher's cream paper-covered boards lettered in black, light grey mottled end papers; separate glassine and light gray plain-paper dust jackets and original gray box with metal clasps. Nevins II, p. 14 ("An immensely moving essay that honors Southern soldiers and leaders and at the same time shows a broad understanding of the whole war."). Harwell (Tall Cotton) 60 ("A moving tribute by the premier historian of the Confederacy."). In June of 1932, a small group of Confederate veterans gathered in their old capitol for the 42nd annual reunion of the United Confederate Veterans. The men were aged, and this was surmised to be their last parade. Freeman, best known for his multi-volume biographies of Robert E. Lee and George Washington (both awarded Pulitzer Prizes), published a commemorative editorial in the Richmond News Leader of Friday, June 24, the final day of the parade: "Today the city has its last review. The armies of the South will march our streets no more. It is the rearguard, engaged with death, that passes now."
