Autograph letter signed ("Gellert") to Friedrich Eberhard von Rochow (1734-1805)
1 page. Quarto. To von Rochau. Dated Leipzig, March 19, 1766. In neat, dense script. In German (with translation). Gellert thanks his correspondent profusely for his support, sends his very best wishes to von Rochau and his wife, speaks of a translation into French of a pamphlet he sent von Rochau, and of his correspondent's report from Rome: "I would have to be a fool to forget you! You, who loves me so much and has given me more proof of your favor than any of my friends and benefactors . Mr. Kalkreuter let me know yesterday that Prince Henry von Franckeville's tutor has translated the short pamphlet I sent you into French. This my dearest friend I let you know should you want to make use of this translation in Berlin . I thank you for the transmission of the report from Rome (Fürst von Diskau visited me on a stop-over in Leipzig; he is a truly noble Prince). Gellert closes "With my quest for your precious love I am always yours, Gellert." Slightly worn; light uniform browning; very minor foxing; slightly creased at folds; evidence of small erasure to upper right corner. Reynolds: C.F. A noted German poet, Gellert "was the most important figure in the German Enlightenment before Lessing, and his simple, honest fables and songs had a broad appeal.
