This image is reproduced in Holzapfel and Shupe's 'Images of a Mormon Prophet' on p.200 it attributes this image to Charles W. Carter: "Preston Nibley, assistant Latter-day Saint Church Historian, published a series of articles about the Mormon leader in the Church section of the Deseret News between 1934 and 1935. He used source materials, including rare photographs obtained directly from the Young family, for his articles. He published a book in 1936 based on that series, which became the standard biography of Brigham for years and included some excellent copies of photographs of the Mormon leader. During this time few historians or publishers provided adequate documentation for photographs included in their works. As a result, we cannot determine where Nibley obtained this unique print of Brigham and have been unable to locate the original, which may have given us important data regarding the identity of the photographer and the date of the image. At this point we rely upon Nibley's caption - 'The date of the photography by Carter is unknown but may be placed between 1860 and 1865' - for the identity of the photographer, but we reject his dating of the image. Since Carter did not arrive in Utah until November 1864 and did not associate himself with Savage and Ottinger's firm until 1867, it is most unlikely that the date given by Nibley is correct.
