Franklin D. Roosevelt
The Portrait of Franklin D. Roosevelt That Was Being Painted When He Died, Signed by the Artist
1945. Elizabeth Shoumatoff was a portrait artist whose extraordinary talent brought commissions from some of the most illustrious families in America, Great Britain and Europe. Her clients included members of the Frick, DuPont, Mellon, and Firestone families. President Franklin D. Roosevelt was sitting for her at his retreat in Warm Springs, Georgia, when he suffered a fatal cerebral hemorrhage on April 12, 1945. When she was working, he said ""I have a terrific pain in the back of my head." He collapsed, lost consciousness, and was pronounced dead at 3:35 PM.This is an oversize color print of the portrait Shoumatoff was painting when FDR died, produced by the Franklin D. Roosevelt Warm Springs Memorial Commission, signed by Shoumatoff. It is just the second one of these we have ever carried.
