London: George Allen and Unwin. 1972. Later printing of the 1949 first edition. Later printing of the 1949 first edition. With a tipped in inscription from the author. Publisher's original pale yellow cloth with dark blue titles to the spine and a beautiful dark blue dragon design to the upper board, in dustwrapper. Light blue dragon pattern to the endpapers. Illustrated throughout with numerous wonderful black and white line drawings and two colour plates by Pauline Baynes. A lovely near fine copy, the binding square and tight with a tiny mark to the upper board. The contents, with some light spotting to the top edge of text block, are otherwise clean and bright throughout and without stamps and inscriptions. Complete with the original price clipped, lightly rubbed and spine toned Pauline Baynes illustrated dust wrapper. Inscribed on a piece of paper specifically for and tipped in at the half title "Signed for Miss Susanna Lamb / J. R. R. Tolkien [underlined]". Provenance: acquired directly from the recipient, whose uncle worked in Oxford and procured the inscription from Tolkien upon meeting him in a pub they both frequented.
