Published in London by John Murray in 1839 two volumes, here bound together in one, this is the First Edition of Murchison?s landmark work in which he set up the Silurian System based on his studies of the rocks of Wales, Shropshire and the Welsh border counties of England, Murchison included both what were later to be classified as the Ordovician and Devonian periods within in his Silurian System, the work is well illustrated with hand coloured sections, folding and single page plates and a series of plates of the fossil fauna, all plates are present the book was sold on subscription with a list of subscribers at the front of the book one of the subscribers was Charles Darwin, as far as I am aware this is the first time his name appeared in print the book attractively bound in a quality recent half leather binding with raised bands, titled in gilt to the spine, internally the two original bookplates have been retained on new endpapers, the one is for Cheltenham public library, who obviously owned it at one time, though there is not a single stamp or library mark in the book the two parts are bound together with continuous pagination without the title page for the second part being bound in, book measures 12.75 inches by 10.25 inches approx. the binding is in very good condition, internally some creasing to title page and one of the folding plates (pictured) there is some light creasing to lower corners of pages from a bump but this is not overly noticeable, some foxing to the title page, text pages generally nice and clean, there is some very heavy fox … [Click Below for Full Description]
