Two volumes in one, collated and complete with 52 hand coloured engraved plates. Joints cracked and repaired (now solid). With plates of a Dodo, page 199 in Vol II, a NarWhale or Sea Unicorn, page 290 of Vol II and a Camelopard (giraffe), page 649 in Vol I. Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon (1707–1788) was a French naturalist, mathematician, cosmologist, and encyclopédiste. His works influenced the next two generations of naturalists, including Jean-Baptiste Lamarck and Georges Cuvier. Buffon published thirty-six quarto volumes of his Histoire Naturelle during his lifetime; with additional volumes based on his notes and further research being published in the two decades following his death. Ernst Mayr wrote that "Truly, Buffon was the father of all thought in natural history in the second half of the 18th century". Buffon held the position of intendant (director) at the Jardin du Roi, now called the Jardin des Plantes. Approximately 8 ½ inches tall. Condition Report Externally Spine – fair condition – worn with gilt title and decoration, worn with loss to the spine tops and bases. Joints – fair condition – both joints cracked but subsequently repaired with new leather beneath. Corners – fair condition – bumped and worn through to the boards.
