Spine with four gold decorated raised bands, and with the title, Ferns stamped in gold, indicating that this album was specifically sold for fern collecting. marbled eps in a mixture of red, blue, white, black and salmon; binder's red stained edges; Binder's ticket for Henry Ahier, 1 Parade, Jersey on the lower corner of the front paste-down corresponds to Henry Ahier, a multigenerational stationery business in St. Helier, on the Isle of Jersey1The recto of each leaf has 7 to 8 different dried and pressed fern specimens surrounding a contemporary chromolithographic greeting card. The greeting cards include Birthday, Christmas, New Years as well as floral, vanity and humorous topics.Pteridomania, or fern madness, began in the late 1830s when the British countryside attracted increasing numbers of amateur and professional botanists, with its most numerous followers being young women.In the socially-acceptable pursuit of ferns, young women could get outdoors, often without the strict chaperonage of indoor activities.
