PEARCE, Francis Barrow.
Zanzibar. The Island Metropolis of Easter Africa.
London: T. Fisher Unwin, 1920. London: T. Fisher Unwin,, 1920. Large octavo. Original bluer cloth, title gilt to the spine, dhow roundel in blind to the centre of the front board. With the rare dust jacket. Portraiture frontispiece and 31 other plates, large folding map at the rear. Spine a touch sunned through the jacket, head and tail mildly crumpled, some give in the hinges, pale toning and a scatter of foxing to the fore-edge, a very good copy in a slightly brittle and fractured jacket lacking a piece at the head of the spine and with a few other chips, but now pieced together verso with archival tape and presenting well. First edition, second impression, published just two months after the first, of this handsomely produced general history of the island by the then British Resident. Welcomed at the time by the Spectator as "an admirable history and description of the Sultanate", the GJ's review of the 1968 reprint was inevitably less enthusiastic, remarking that the "view is that from the Residency window, not from the bazaar". However, Pearce is commended for his service to archaeology in drawing attention to the importance of the ruins on the East African coast, particularly those at Pemba. Contemporary ownership inscription of Lois B. Yate, daughter of Sir Charles Yate, of Afghan Boundary Commission fame, later consul at Muscat. Charming loosely inserted note from Lois recalling gathering beads of the kind described at p.355 when at Weti harbour Pemba in 1925, "many are of exquisite blue & green colouring".
