Charles Darwin
On the Various Contrivances by Which British and Foreign Orchids Are Fertilised by Insects, and On the Good Effects of Intercrossing
CHARLES DARWIN, 1862. First edition, first issue. The bookplate of a Richard Oliver to the front pastedown. Text complete with the 33 illustrations and the folding plate. The publisherÂ’s original plum cloth, with bright stamped gilt on the titles and on the orchid emblem. Edmonds & Remmant bookbinderÂ’s ticket to the rear pastedown. Very minor loss to the head and tail of the spine, with the binding skillfully rebacked in period cloth, and the original spine laid down to preserve the original gilt. Now a very tight and square volume. Original endpapers preserved with new hinges from matching period paper. Clean and unfoxed throughout. A beautiful copy with only the most discrete of restoration, presenting as near fine. A landmark book, widely considered the basis of all modern scientific work on coevolution. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
Bookseller: Canton Books [Princeton, NJ, U.S.A.]
