Stiff to open with no front paste down but collated and complete. Collates as follows: Title X (Greek symbol) to Zz in gatherings of 8 pages. Very small worming to the margin of pages 59 to 63; page 235 marked with a stain with text still legible; page 359 torn without loss; page 645 torn to the lower corner with loss to the margin text; from Xx onwards pages are loose; from page 675 to the end (731 + 2 pages of errata) worming goes from a pinprick hole to a larger wormed are with minor loss to the text – see images. Johannes Heidfeld was a popular writer at the beginning of the 17th century, about whose life little is known. Born a Westphalian and born to Waltorff, he was first professor of Protestant theology at the Gymnasium in Herborn, then pastor of Ebersbach in the county of Nassau and after Flitner. He died in 1623. Theologian and philologist, he published a large number of less important and now forgotten works, with the exception of his "Sphinx philosophica," which has retained value for the researcher of German proverbs. The book was published in numerous editions from 1600 to 1631, in Dutch, and at the time enjoyed great popularity, even with King James I. Approximately 6 ¼ inches tall (16.5cm).
