Alice's Adventures in Wonderland; Through the Looking-Glass.
London: Macmillan and Co., 1869 & 1885. London: Macmillan and Co.,, 1869 & 1885. Carroll inscribes his most famous work 2 volumes, octavo (180 x 122 mm). Finely bound for Henry Sotheran in red morocco, titles and decoration to spines gilt, raised bands, Alice motifs to covers, gilt rules to turn-ins, marbled endpapers, edges gilt. Housed in a custom red cloth and morocco slipcase. With black and white illustrations by Tenniel. An excellent set, attractively bound. Presentation copy of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, inscribed by the author on the half-title, "Mary Trimmer, from the author." Dodgson had lunch with Mary's family on 6 August 1868; her father was Revd. Trimmer, Rector of St Mary, Guildford, and Carroll later photographed Mary. A beautifully bound set of these later printings (Alice's Adventures was first published in 1866; Alice Through the Looking Glass in 1872).
