[Puerto Rico]: n.p., 1823. First edition. A very good untrimmed copy, small marginal tear at fold and some light marginal staining.. Broadside. [1] p. 31 x 22 cm. In 1823 the newly formed Colombian navy attempted to blockade Puerto Cavello and deal a final blow to the Spanish attempts to reconquer the mainland of South America. Puerto Rico acted as a base of Spanish operations for Spain's various efforts. A few days earlier, a large naval battle occurred, and Spain defeated the Colombian frigate Constitution, of 48 guns, manned with 450 men, and the corvette Ceres, carrying 27 guns, and 350 men. But the cost to Spain was high according to the Colombian Commodore Daniels: "The enemy have suffered greatly, both in the hulls and rigging of their vessels; I have not been able to ascertain the exact number of their killed and wounded, but, from what I have heard, the number must be very considerable" Niles Register, 1823, V24 pp 298-300).In this broadside, after reporting on the success of the battle, Francisco González de Linares, who was appointed Governor General of Puerto Rico just a year earlier, acknowledges as much and calls for public support for aid in repairing the Spanish ships which were damaged in order to exterminate the enemy."Pero nuestros buques y los apresados han sufrido considerablemente y necesitan prontos reparos para hacerse à la mar, para exterminar los restos de aquella marina que ha venido à insultarnos en nuestras costas, y para asegurar vuestra tranquilidad.En tal situación, el Comandante general D, Angel Laborde, se dirige à vosotros con La firme … [Click Below for Full Description]
