J.B. Silvis, Photographer and Viewest, Salt Lake City, 1870. Carte de visite. Albumen [5.5 cm x 9.5 cm] photograph on a white mount with gilt borders [6 cm x 10 cm] J.B. Silvis back stamp. Strong contrasts. Image shows the Devil's Gate bridge in Weber Canyon crossing the Weber River. J.B. Silvis (1830-1900) was an early Salt Lake photographer who briefly partnered with Charles W. Carter (1867-68) before becoming the official photographer for the Union Pacific Railroad (1870-1880) where he was furnished with his own elaborate train car gallery that was emblazoned with the words: "Stereoscopic landscape views of notable points on line of Pacific R.R. always on hand, J.B. Silvis, Photographer." Views by Silvis are rare. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
